An ecommerce SEO audit should not begin with title tags or a keyword spreadsheet. Those checks matter, but they rarely outrank a crawl or indexing problem affecting revenue-generating pages. I start by locating the small set of technical, structural and template-level faults that can suppress an entire store, then review page-level details.

Your Audit Starts with Prioritisation Not Perfection

A long fault list can hide weak decision-making. Hundreds of warnings may look thorough, yet the useful question is what should the team fix first?

I start with the commercial map. Which categories already attract demand? Which products have healthy margins, dependable stock and existing impressions? Which page templates serve large parts of the catalogue? A defect on one product page deserves investigation, but a defect in the product template can affect every product page simultaneously.

The UK market makes this prioritisation commercially relevant. Online retail represents a substantial share of national retail demand, as noted earlier. That does not make every technical issue urgent. It does mean a site-wide indexing or performance fault can reduce visibility across a meaningful set of revenue-generating pages.

The five questions I ask before opening a crawler

I use five questions to keep the audit tied to commercial outcomes:

  • Can Google discover the right pages? I review navigation, internal links, XML sitemaps and crawl paths.
  • Can Google index the right pages? I check for accidental noindex directives, unsuitable canonicals and exclusions in Search Console.
  • Can users access the store efficiently? I test mobile layouts, template speed and checkout-adjacent interactions.
  • Do important pages match search intent? Category pages should help shoppers compare products, while product pages should answer specific buying questions.
  • Does authority reach commercial pages? Internal and external links should support pages that matter to the business.

I compare likely impact with implementation effort. A change to one shared template usually outranks manually rewriting isolated descriptions. A category page already receiving impressions may deserve attention before a new content idea, because it has evidence of existing demand.

Practical rule: A useful audit ends with decisions, owners and implementation order, not a longer checklist.

My process follows the most impactful path: assess foundations, identify valuable templates, then examine architecture, supporting content and authority. This keeps effort focused on the small group of audit tasks most likely to influence organic revenue, rather than spreading time evenly across superficial page-level tweaks.

Nailing the Technical Foundations First

I start in Google Search Console, not with a keyword tool. Open the indexing and performance reports, inspect important URLs individually, and compare the pages Google has indexed with the pages the business expects to rank. Then crawl the site with Screaming Frog so I can inspect status codes, canonicals, directives, redirects, crawl depth and links in one working view.

Crawlability and indexability

Check robots.txt for accidental restrictions on category, product or image paths. Review meta-robots directives in the rendered HTML, because a page can be linked correctly and still carry a noindex. Validate the XML sitemap, remove URLs that shouldn't be indexed, and make sure important canonical URLs are represented consistently.

Search Console coverage is particularly useful when paired with a crawl. A crawler shows what the site exposes. Search Console shows how Google has handled those URLs. The difference between the two often reveals duplicate, redirected, blocked or excluded pages that a crawl alone won't explain.

I also review JavaScript-dependent navigation. If a product grid, filter or internal link only appears after an interaction that search systems can't reliably process, the store may expose less content than the browser suggests.

Speed is a template problem

Run the homepage, a representative category page and a representative product page through PageSpeed Insights. Don't rely on one lab report. Compare that report with field data in Search Console, because lab testing simulates a visit while field data reflects real user experiences.

The usual causes are oversized product imagery, render-blocking scripts, excessive app code and unstable components that move when images load. Category pages need to help shoppers choose

A category query such as “men's running shoes” usually signals exploration. The page should make comparison easy through a clear heading, useful product grid, sensible filters and supporting copy that explains the range. I check whether the page answers practical questions about use, fit, materials or shopping criteria, rather than merely repeating the category name.

I also inspect the search results manually. If Google consistently shows category pages for the target query, a product detail page is probably the wrong landing page. If the results show guides or comparisons, the store may need supporting content rather than another commercial template.

Metadata matters, but it comes after relevance. A unique title and description can improve how a listing communicates its value, yet rewriting metadata won't compensate for a category page that doesn't satisfy the underlying task.

Product pages need precision

Product searches are narrower. A shopper looking for a specific model, size or colour needs accurate information, availability, delivery expectations, specifications, imagery and returns guidance. I check whether the product title is unambiguous, whether the description adds information beyond manufacturer copy, and whether variants are represented without creating confusing duplicate URLs.

Structured data is the machine-readable layer that helps search systems identify products, prices, availability, brands and relationships between entities. I validate the implementation, compare it with visible page content and check Search Console for structured-data errors.

Product schema can't rescue a poor page. It can help search systems interpret a good one.

I prioritise pages with impressions but weak clicks, pages ranking for the wrong intent and high-value products with thin or duplicated content. That approach is more useful than applying the same copy template to an entire catalogue.

Analysing Site Architecture and Internal Linking

A store's architecture is its road map. Customers use it to move from broad categories to specific products, while search engines use links and hierarchy to discover pages and interpret their relationships.

I start by drawing the current structure from the homepage through primary categories, subcategories, filters and products. Then I compare it with the way people search. If the navigation reflects the company's internal departments but not the customer's language, the store may be tidy from an organisational perspective and still difficult to find.

Facets need a deliberate URL policy

Filters for size, colour, brand and price improve browsing, but every selectable combination can create another URL. Many of those URLs contain near-duplicate product grids with no independent search value.

I export parameter URLs from a crawl and group them by function. Sort orders and arbitrary combinations usually don't deserve indexation. A filter page with clear demand, a stable URL and valuable content may deserve a different treatment from a temporary sorting URL.

The practical controls need to match the situation:

  • Control crawl paths: Use robots.txt where appropriate for filter routes that create no useful search destination.
  • Keep formats consistent: Avoid multiple URL patterns for the same filter combination, including inconsistent parameter ordering.
  • Handle empty combinations properly: Return a 404 when a filter combination produces no products, rather than serving an empty page.

These principles align with specialist guidance on faceted navigation. Canonical tags are useful signals, but they aren't a substitute for a coherent crawl policy. Blocking a URL also prevents crawlers from seeing signals on that page, so I decide based on whether the URL has unique value and whether it needs to be discovered.

I look for orphaned products, categories buried deep in the crawl and important pages linked only from filters. Breadcrumbs should provide a reliable path back to parent categories, while contextual links from category copy and useful guides can reinforce topical relationships.

The homepage shouldn't carry the entire internal-linking burden. A strong structure gives important category pages links from relevant supporting content, related categories and navigational components. Product links should remain useful to shoppers, not become a block of repetitive keyword anchors.

Supporting content should help shoppers and strengthen pages that can generate revenue. I do not review every blog post based solely on its existence. I look for evidence that a guide attracts relevant searches, answers a genuine question, or directs users towards a suitable category or product.

Search engines remain a major entry point for ecommerce journeys. As noted earlier, research indicates that many consumers begin shopping through search, with Google used widely for online purchasing. Informational content therefore needs a job beyond collecting visits. It should help the right shopper make progress.

Keep content that supports a buying decision

I assess each important guide against three practical questions:

  • Does it match a distinct intent? A sizing guide should resolve sizing uncertainty, rather than repeat a category description.
  • Does it link naturally to commercial pages? A guide about choosing running shoes should make relevant category and product paths clear.
  • Does it still reflect the catalogue? Discontinued products, unavailable colours and outdated advice reduce trust and can create poor user journeys.

Content with no audience, useful purpose or sensible internal destination may need consolidation or removal. I do not rewrite weak posts automatically. Redirecting one into a stronger resource can be better, while some pages should remain untouched until higher-value template or technical work is complete.

For backlinks, I use Ahrefs or Semrush to examine referring domains, anchor patterns, linked pages and obvious spam. An unfamiliar domain is not automatically a problem. The useful questions are whether the profile contains credible, relevant references and whether commercially important pages receive external support.

Backlink findings should shape outreach and content decisions. A store with genuine expertise but little recognition may need assets that deserve references, supported by a focused link-building consultancy where the internal capability is limited. If links point almost exclusively to the homepage, assess whether useful guides or category resources could attract attention and distribute authority through internal links.

The audit should establish the need before prospecting begins. Buying volume without relevance will not replace trusted references, useful content or strong commercial page templates.

Turning Your Audit into a Prioritised Action Plan

An audit becomes valuable when someone can implement it. I turn findings into a delivery plan with a clear issue, affected templates, expected outcome, owner, dependency and priority. I don't send a list of warnings and expect a developer to infer the commercial order.

I use a simple matrix:

I order work by commercial surface area. A product-template fix that improves every eligible URL may be more valuable than manually editing a small group of pages. A category page with existing impressions may deserve attention before a brand-new article, because the former already has a relationship with search demand.

Make the roadmap measurable
